Should I use the straw lid after a tonsillectomy?

Hospitals genuinely disagree, so we're not defaulting it on. UC Davis Children's Hospital says straws are fine ("It is OK to use a straw"); Memorial Hermann says the opposite ("should not drink through a straw after surgery until the throat is completely healed because it may increase the risk of bleeding"). Is this the same straw caution as wisdom teeth or hiatal hernia surgery?

No — different surgeries, different mechanisms. Wisdom-teeth straw avoidance is about dry-socket risk (suction dislodging a clot at an extraction site) for 24-48 hours. Hiatal-hernia straw avoidance is about gas-bloat syndrome (a surgical wrap makes it harder to relieve trapped gas). Tonsillectomy's straw question is a genuine, disclosed disagreement between hospitals about bleeding-risk-adjacent healing — not a settled rule either way.
