The fact

Cleveland Clinic: “You'll need two surgeries. One for a trial phase, and then a second to permanently implant the device.” UCSF Health, independently: “There are two stages involved in the spinal cord stimulator procedure.”

Two more independent sources — Northwestern Medicine and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) — corroborate the same two-stage structure with zero contradiction across all four sources checked for this hub.

What happens during the trial (Stage 1)?

A needle places one or two thin wires into the epidural space, outside the spinal cord itself — no permanent incision, no internal battery. The wires connect to a generator you wear outside your body, usually clipped to a belt or waistband, for a short stretch:

UCSF gives a closely matching window: about one week, tested “at home in your normal surroundings.” During that week, Northwestern Medicine's own instructions are specific about what changes:

One specific, sourced positive-and-negative pair worth knowing before the trial starts: ice is fine, heat is not. Twin Cities Orthopedics: “apply an ice pack covered in a soft cloth to the site(s) for 15 to 20 minutes during the first 24 hours” (see the pick, $6.98 on Amazon) — but “DO NOT use a heating pad or any form of heat on the procedure site(s) during this trial period.”

What happens between the trial and the permanent implant?

This is the one part of the whole process this page deliberately doesn't cover in detail — whether a trial “worked,” and whether to move forward with a permanent implant, is a clinical decision between you and your care team, not an equipment or coverage question.
