Why the brace is conditional, not universal

This is a genuinely bimodal category. Three independent hospitals — University of Washington, Brigham and Women's, and University of Kentucky — plus AAOS's own general knee-arthroscopy page all agree: a hinged brace is standard equipment if your surgeon reconstructed your ACL or repaired (stitched) a meniscus tear, and it's absent entirely from the equipment list for a simple meniscus trim, chondroplasty, or debridement. AAOS states the rule in one sentence: "Sometimes braces are used post-operatively if a repair or reconstruction is performed that must be protected." Fitment: locking, sizing, and the six-week window

• Locked in extension while walking: University of Washington's own post-op sheet: "When you are using crutches your brace must be locked in extension. You must wear the hinged-knee brace for the first 6 weeks."
